NYS Veterans Get a Military Skills Waiver When Applying For a CDL

If you are a veteran with military experience driving commercial vehicles and are applying for a CDL, you may be eligible for a Military Skills Waiver.  This will allow you to apply for a waiver of the NYS CDL skills road test.

Requirements to apply include:

• a current NYS driver license, or a valid out of state driver license that can be exchanged for a NYS driver license
• Meet all other requirements to qualify for a CDL
• Be currently employed within last 90 days in a military position (active duty or New York National Guard) that requires operation of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV)
• 2 years immediate experience operating a CMV of the type the driver operates or expects to operate before the application date if on active duty, or before the discharge date from the military.
