If you are a veteran with military experience driving commercial vehicles and are applying for a CDL, you may be eligible for a Military Skills Waiver. This will allow you to apply for a waiver of the NYS CDL skills road test.
Requirements to apply include:
- a current NYS driver license, or a valid out of state driver license that can be exchanged for a NYS driver license
- Meet all other requirements to qualify for a CDL
- Be currently employed within last 90 days in a military position (active duty or New York National Guard) that requires operation of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV)
- 2 years immediate experience operating a CMV of the type the driver operates or expects to operate before the application date if on active duty, or before the discharge date from the military.
Here’s a link to the application form CDL-102. Perks include no skills test fee. However, you must still pay for the written, permit and license fee. You must of course pass the written test. The type of CDL you receive, along with applicable endorsements and restrictions will depend on the type of CMV you operated in the military. Depending on the type of driving you certify to (Non-Excepted or Excepted Interstate or Intrastate), you may need to come in for a DOT physical to get your Medical Examiner’s Certificate. See dotmedicalexaminerblog post “New York State CDL Holders-Do You Need Help Filling Out Your Self Certification Form”? for explanation of the driving types you can certify to, and whether or not you are required to get a Medical Examiner’s Certificate. Call us at 718-701-5949 to schedule your DOT physical, and we will help you quickly figure out all of these terminologies if necessary. You will also get a 10% discount from our already low prices. Proof of military service is required).
