Jan 30, 2014 was the deadline for commercial drivers (CDL holders) to submit their self certification forms to their State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) regarding the type of type of commercial vehicle operation they drive in or expect to drive in with their CDL. As they say this ship has sailed already. What happens if you didn’t comply? Well, you will receive a Notice Of Non-Compliance And License Downgrade Letter from the Medical Certification Unit of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles in Albany. The license is downgraded pursuant to New york State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 510-aa to a non-commercial driver license. In other words you will no longer be able to continue to operate a commercial vehicle that requires a commercial driver license (CDL).
However, all hope is not loss especially if you remedy the situation immediately! You can complete form MC-11A (Medical and Self Certification Requirement For Commercial Drivers). Click on the provided link and you will get the form directly from the NYS DMV website and come in for a physical to get your DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate, if you self certify to Non-Excepted Interstate or Intrastate driving. If you need to amend your license to remove a restriction you may have to visit your local DMV after you get your Medical Examiner’s Certificate from us. If you do not have to amend your license, after your DOT physical with us you can mail a copy of your Medical Examiner’s Certificate and the MC-11A form to:
New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
Medical Certification Unit
P.O. Box 2601
Albany, NY 12220-0601
