In addition to the other risks associated with sleep apnea such as diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, increased hearing loss has been found in a study of Latinos in a Hispanic Community Health Study. Hispanics are reported to be more likely than other groups to experience sleep apnea and in the study a 31% independent association between sleep apnea and hearing loss was found. Theories regarding the cause of the hearing loss include the lack of oxygen to the inner ear causing damage to tissues over time, to just sheer long term exposure to the very loud snoring noises.
