DOT Physical Examination Requirement and NYS CDL Drivers With a K Restriction

In New York State a K restriction means that the Commercial Driver can only operate his vehicle within NYS or in other words INTRA-State only.  However, please remember that this does not mean that you do not need a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.  NYS DOT follows  Federal DOT guidelines and unless you operate only in exempted type of driving you will still need a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (see dotmedicalexaminerblog.com for more information on types of driving).  CDL drivers issued a K restriction because their original CDL was issued prior to 9/9/1999 or were not able to meet Federal guidelines will have to obtain an A3 restriction (Medical Certificate Exempt) restriction in addition to the K restriction.  With those two restrictions together then the CDL driver will not be required to have a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and can operate within NYS only.  See the NYS DMV website for more information.
