New York State Driver Qualification Requirements

New York State (NYS) drivers with a K restriction should keep in mind that NYS follows Federal Regulations, and that a “K ” restriction alone no longer means that you do not require a medical examiner’s certificate (MEC).  See the following for more information regarding the K restriction and the “A3” or (Med Cert Exempt) restriction, and for a discussion of the various types of driving and requirements for a MEC.

As stated in the NYS Code of Rules and Regulations:

In general, New York State has adopted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations found in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR), Parts 390, 391, 392, 393, 395, 396, and 397 and the Hazardous Materials Transportation Regulations found in 49 CFR, Parts 100 through 199 as they apply to interstate highway transportation.
